Awareness for Colorectal Cancer: Rumpshaker & How to Get Involved

December 21, 2024

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and women in the United States. While common, colorectal cancer is often overlooked because of the nature of its symptoms. But, if you can recognize the signs, you are more likely to catch this lethal disease early.

At Alabama Colon & Rectal Institute, it’s our mission to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and diminish the stigma around it. Learn more about our fight against colorectal cancer and how you can get involved.

What Is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer occurs when cells of the colon or rectum grow out of control. Sometimes, abnormal growths called polyps may form in the colon or rectum and turn into colorectal cancer, but this isn’t always the case.

If caught early, treatment is highly effective. By understanding the symptoms, you can help yourself, and others gain the best chance against colorectal cancer. We advise regular screenings for those over the age of 45 or before if you have a family history of colorectal cancer.

What Are the Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer?

The most common symptom of colorectal cancer in its early stages is a change in your regular bowel movements that lasts a few days. This may include

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Narrowing of the stool
  • Unusual discomfort

You could also notice the feelings or sensations of needing a bowel movement that doesn’t go away after having one. Some people will notice blood in their stool or bleeding from their rectum. More general symptoms may include weakness, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss.

It’s important to note that these symptoms can also signify other less severe conditions, such as hemorrhoids. But, if the symptoms last more than a few days, we recommend seeking medical care.

How We’re Raising Awareness for Colorectal Cancer

At The Alabama Colon & Rectal Institute in Birmingham, we are committed to raising awareness for a wide range of rectal conditions that people are often embarrassed about or nervous to discuss—chief among them being colorectal cancer.

To raise awareness, our Alabama Colon & Rectal Institute team participates in the Rumpshaker 5k race each year. The Rumpshaker 5K is the largest free-standing 5K in Alabama that has been held for 14 years. This race raises millions of dollars and promotes awareness about these conditions, including how they can be prevented and treated.

We recently gave back to the Birmingham community by participating in and fundraising for this race in March 2023. We’re honored to serve and be a member of the Birmingham community and surrounding areas.
